Throw-away rocket for burning old motors

Upon announcement of the NAR's Expired Motor Testing Program, I built two rockets for use with the old motors.  This rocket is for the 18mm motors, the first of which was to be  an AVI D6.1-0 booster motor.

That booster cato'd and took with it the motor tube in the booster.  But that was easily replaced.  The net effect was blistered paint on both the booster and sustainer.

I have yet to burn any other of the target old motors, but it has suffered another cato (shown below).

The sustainer was also used in my daughter's science fair project.

Since it was designed as a throw-away, minimal effort was put into the finish.  No filling of the seams or wood grain was performed.  A couple coats of primer followed by sanding and paint was all the effort that was made.

The airframe is BT-55.  The idea was to keep it fairly light but make it draggy.  That way the low thrust D6.1 wouldn't have any problem getting it going off the rod, but the drag would help keep the altitude down.  One of these days, I'll try another one of those D6.1's

Here's a good shot of one of its successful flights.

And here's a great shot of a B6-0 cato.

The booster let go on the rod but managed to get the sustainer lit which then put in a good flight.

And the booster suffered no worse than some more paint blistering.

This is a close-up of the cato-ing booster.
