Doug's Rockets

| To the right of the workbench is the paint hutch. It was once
the sink stand in my basement bathroom in Maryland Heights, MO. I
added the top shelves to it not long after moving to Dallas.
I use mostly Rust-Oleum – it gives a great finish and tolerates the high humidity well. The few cans of Krylon get used those two days a year when the dew point it low enough that they won't blush. The rattle cans are better suited for the model rockets. While the paint guns are the only way to go on the bigger rockets, they're wasteful of paint on the small rockets – you'll use more paint cleaning the gun than you will put on the rocket – so I can't get away from the spray cans. On the right is my hygrometer which is a must for getting good paint jobs. Lower left is a view of the bench grinder.

Next to the paint hutch are my older tool chests. The middle
chest on the left, and the middle spacer on the right were added recently
and are great for adding a little more storage space.
The push broom handle doubles as a painting stick for the larger rockets. The extension cord on the floor is there because it's awaiting repair. My wife "trimmed" it while she was trimming the hedges. |
| The east side of the shop is the garage door, and the painting zone.
Newspapers provide a backdrop and test shot area.

| The middle of the garage holds my sawhorses, lawn mower, woodpile and air conditioner. Yes, air conditioner. |

| The saw horses are great for painting, fiberglassing and otherwise
working on the bigger rockets. The rocket rotisserie brackets are
attached to the saw horses, but can be easily removed if necessary.
The rotisserie drive motor is the black and yellow object on the shop cart
at far right.
After tripping over the woodpile too often, I build a rack with casters. The woodpile can now be easily rolled out of the way in only seconds. The air conditioner might be decadent, but when I purchased it, I was suffering from an undiagnosed case of diabetes, one symptom of which is profuse sweating. My blood sugar is under control now, but the A/C still comes in handy on those hot Texas days. |

Last but not least, here's a perfect use for your unsuccessful flights – ceiling decorations. These are the remains of my first Level 2 attempt, and they make interesting conversation pieces for the shop. |
| So there you have it, Doug's Rocket Shop. Doug. |
