| Here are three rockets, all based on
classic model rocket
designs, and all built using Quest Big Bettys as starting points.
At left is the Betty-Gee, an
upscale based on the old Apogee II two-stage
rocket. In the middle is the Bet-Git, an
upscale based on the old Midget 2-stager. And on the right is the
Betty-Sprint,
a tribute to the old Sprint competition kit.
All three use 24 mm motors.
By the way, that's an Astron Sprint decal on the
Betty-Sprint fin at far right.
Now, I need to find another good design to bash from the
last Big Betty I have in my stash.

At left is yours truly
just before launching the Betty-Gee
on its maiden flight, February 12, 2005, in Rockwall, Texas.
She went up on a C11-0 to D12-7. Way kewl!
The C11 booster
gets it going nicely, but burns out low enough to give a good view of
staging.
She came down in a tree, but a little shaking
got her safely to the ground.

| I don't have any decals for
the Bet-Git (yet)
but it still looks great without them.
Her maiden flight was also today (Feb 12, 2005) on a
C11-0 to C11-7.
I was a little concerned the delay might be a bit long, but it worked
great.
The mylar chute was shredded, but the rocket received only a minor ding
on one fin and a tiny crack in the base of the nosecone, neither of
which
were caused by the chute.
And the ding on the fin gives me an excuse to paint that
one blue :)

Here's your truly again at the pads just
before the Betty-Sprint's
maiden flight. I had planned to fly it on a D12-7, but the winds
were just enough to take it beyond the cleared ground into the trees
and
tall weeds, so I motored down to a C11-5. Great flight.
Pristine
recovery. |
